Photochromic lenses, often called transition lenses, are eyeglass lenses that automatically darken when you go outdoors and return to clear when you come back inside. For many patients, they are one of the easiest lens upgrades because they add comfort, convenience, and UV protection without needing to switch between regular glasses and sunglasses.

Transitions® is actually a brand name, while photochromic lenses is the general term for lenses that change tint in response to light. The lenses use special molecules that react to sunlight and UV exposure, causing the lens to darken outside and fade back toward clear indoors.

What Are Photochromic Lenses?

Are Photochromic Lenses the Same as Polarized Sunglasses?

No. This is an important difference.

Who May Still Need Prescription Sunglasses?

  • Spend a lot of time on the water

  • Play outdoor sports

  • Want maximum darkness outdoors

  • Prefer polarized lenses

  • Want a specific sunglass style or mirror coating

Many patients do best with both: photochromic lenses for everyday glasses and polarized prescription sunglasses for driving, beach days, and high-glare activities.


Do Photochromic Lenses Stay Dark Indoors?

Most modern photochromic lenses become mostly clear indoors. However, some lenses may keep a slight residual tint depending on the lens type, temperature, age of the lens, and lighting conditions.

Some newer photochromic designs are made to fade back faster. For example, Transitions GEN S lenses are described as fading back faster while becoming very dark outdoors under activated conditions.


Do They Work on Cloudy Days?

Yes, photochromic lenses can still darken on cloudy days because UV light can pass through clouds. They may not get as dark as they would in direct sunlight, but they can still provide added comfort outdoors.
