Many people start noticing changes in their near vision in their 40s.
Small print gets harder. The phone seems too close. Restaurant menus need brighter light. You may find yourself holding things farther away to see them clearly.
This common change is called presbyopia.
Presbyopia happens because the natural lens inside the eye becomes less flexible over time.

Your Eye Has a Natural Focusing Lens
Inside the eye, behind the colored iris, is a clear natural lens. When you are young, this lens is soft and flexible. It changes shape to help you focus at different distances.
This focusing ability is called accommodation.
When you look far away, the lens relaxes. When you look up close, the lens flexes to bring near objects into focus.
This process happens automatically for many years.
The Lens Starts Aging Earlier Than You Think
Most people do not notice presbyopia until their 40s, but the lens has been slowly changing long before that.
The natural lens gradually becomes firmer and less flexible over time. In childhood and young adulthood, the lens still has plenty of focusing ability, so we usually do not notice the change.
Eventually, though, the lens cannot flex enough to focus comfortably up close.

Why Farsighted Patients May Notice Problems Earlier
Presbyopia can be especially frustrating for patients with hyperopia, or farsightedness.
In hyperopia, the eye naturally needs extra focusing power to make vision clear. Many young farsighted patients do not realize they have a prescription because their natural lens is flexible enough to focus through some or most of the farsightedness.
In other words, the eye may be “hiding” the prescription by constantly focusing in the background.
This can work well when the lens is young and flexible. But as the lens becomes firmer, it becomes harder to focus through the farsighted prescription and still have enough focusing power left for reading.
By the 40s, many farsighted patients can no longer comfortably do both jobs:
Focus through the hyperopic prescription
Focus up close for reading, phones, and computer work
That is why farsighted patients may notice eye strain, headaches, or near blur earlier than someone who is nearsighted.
Why Nearsighted Patients May Notice It Differently
Nearsighted patients often experience presbyopia differently.
Some nearsighted patients can still read up close by taking off their distance glasses. This does not mean they avoided presbyopia. It just means their natural prescription gives them a built-in near focal point when their glasses are removed.
They may still struggle with computer distance, progressives, contact lenses, or switching between distances.
Why Readers or Progressives Help
Reading glasses, bifocals, and progressive lenses help by reducing the amount of focusing your natural lens has to do.
For someone with presbyopia, near glasses provide extra focusing power for close work. For someone who is farsighted, glasses may also reduce the effort needed to overcome the distance prescription.
That is why a good prescription can make vision clearer and more comfortable.

Presbyopia can be managed in several ways, including:
Reading glasses
Prescription reading glasses
Bifocals
Progressive lenses
Computer glasses
Multifocal contact lenses
Monovision contact lenses
Presbyopia eye drops for select patients
The best option depends on your prescription, age, visual demands, job, hobbies, and how your eyes work together.
